Developing Accuracy that Leads to Fluency

As mentioned earlier, teaching speaking involves focusing on both accuracy and fluency. Accuracy is important and vital for fluency to occur, but getting stuck in the accuracy (or mechanical) stage is all too easy. One remedy may be to move form-focused activities, even mechanical practices when possible, toward real-world communication. Even drills are more meaningful, not to mention interesting, when teachers can add a real-world context, preferably the context of the lesson, and make drills or practices interactive. Problem-solving activities do this. Although they could be done individually, the challenge of figuring out the answers motivates interaction because students intuitively know that two heads are better than one. For example, while learning family relationship vocabulary, the students could answer tricky questions like “Who is the mother of my niece’s mother?”
